40 Lawmakers In Touch: Narendra Modi’s Threat to Democracy Not Mamata

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claim that 40 MLA’s of the Trinamool Congress are in touch with him has received wide criticism from many quarters. The claim is being perceived as a direct threat to the democracy and not Mamata Banerjee only. By saying this, the Prime Minister has demonstrated that he does not believe in democracy and can do anything to cling on to power.

The Prime Minister had, in an election rally on April 29th, issued a veiled threat to Mamata Banerjee saying “ Didi, 40 of your MLAs are in contact with me”.

This claim has been attracting sharp criticism. According to political analysts, this is nothing but Modi’s arrogance speaking. He is showing that he can do anything to topple a democratically elected government.

The BJP has only one MP in West Bengal. With this strength it wants to capture the political landscape in the state. It’s nothing but his dictatorial instincts.

The speech proves that the Bharatiya Janata Party can buy the constitutionally elected representatives to its side and harm the democracy. It’s anti-democratic and unconstitutional. The Prime Minister is hinting at horse treading.

To a person like the Prime Minister of India, such claims are seen to be cheap and uncalled for. This is not the first time that the Prime Minister has showed this type of threat. He and his party leaders have given comments many a times like this and have threatening the very institution of democracy. The actions are not limited to electoral battle.

According to political observers, Prime Minister Modi led government is all out to destroy the fundamental structure of democracy in India. Key institutions in India such as the judiciary, security agencies, Reserve Bank and the Election Commission have not been able to withstand government pressure tactics.

The government has a three pronged strategy for this. This could be controlling of judiciary and security agencies like the RAW, NIA and CBI, marginalising political opponents like he did in many states and changing the rules to gain unfair advantages in elections.

The BJP led government is leaving nothing to undermine political opposition and using all the tricks to make an "opposition-fee" India.
In states, where the BJP has no popular mandate, it indulged in various tactics to capture power.

The recent threat to Mamata Banerjee is an eye opener to many. It has come at a time when three more phases of polling is yet to take place for the general elections. To this Mamata Banerjee has also gave a fitting reply.

Mamata has said that prime minister’s claims are unconstitutional and illegal. She has called for the intervention of the Election Commission of India and cancel Modi’s candidature.

Mamata said "My party does not steal like yours". PM Modi "has no right to be the Prime Minister".

She said "I am saying at least find one”.

Accusing the Prime Minister of horse trading, the TMC has asked the Election Commission to scrap the nomination of Prime Minister Modi for the ensuing polls. "Aren't you ashamed? You claim yourself to be a protector of the constitution? In spite of being in a constitutional position, you are violating it. You don't have any right to be the Prime Minister, ex-prime minister," she said.
