Yogi Adityanath, Mayawati Barred from Campaigning for Hate Speech

Yogi Adityanath, Mayawati Barred from Campaigning

New Delhi:  In a significant development, the Election Commission of India today barred Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and BSP chief Mayawati from campaigning for communal remarks.

The UP CM was barred for 72 hours, while Mayawati has been barred for 48 hours, the poll body said in a statement.

The two leaders have also been "censured".

The Election Commission slapped a notice to the BSP supremo for her speech in Deoband appealing to Muslims to not vote for a particular party. Mayawati had prima facie violated the model code of conduct, EC noted.

Adityanath was issued the notice for his "Ali" and "Bajrang Bali" remarks while addressing a rally in Meerut.
The BJP leader compared the Lok Sabha elections to a contest between 'Ali', a revered figure in Islam, and Bajrang Bali, the Hindu god Hanuman.
The poll body’s action came in the wake of the Supreme Court criticized the Commission for its failure to take action against hate speech during the Lok Sabha election campaign.

The apex court wanted to know from the EC about the action initiated against the two leaders.
