81 Killed, Several Injured in Major Fire in Dhaka

Dhaka: At least 81 people have been killed and several critically injured in a major fire outbreak in Bangladesh Capital Dhaka on Thursday. It is said to be the city’s worst fire incident since 2012.

According to sources, the toll could climb up as bodies are being extracted from the rubbles.

According to sources, around 200 firefighters were used to contain the fire. The fire broke out in the densely populated area of the Bangladesh Capital where around 3 million people were living.

Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is monitoring the situation.  Khan also said that a five-member team has been formed to investigate the cause of the incident.

According to sources the fire broke out on Wednesday night at a chemical warehouse on the ground floor of a four-storey building (Hazi Wahed Mansion) and gradually spread to other areas. The building is behind a mosque in Old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar area.
