New Delhi: According to a report in a significant movement France is going to move a proposal the United Nations (UN) to designate Pakistan’s terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) Chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist.
JeM has claimed the responsibility for the suicide terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama District on 14 February in which 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers were martyred.
India has been pressing at the UN to designate Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. Following the Pulwama attack India is again raising the issue again.
The bid will be the second time when France will be supporting a proposal at the UN to designate Azhar as a global terrorist.
"At the UN, France will lead a proposal to put Masood Azhar on the terrorist list... It will happen in a couple of days," a senior French source told PTI.
In 2017, the United States, had moved a proposal at the UN's 'Sanctions Committee 1267' to ban the Azhar. The bid was supported by the United Kingdom and France, however, China blocked the proposal.
China has been the only country in the 15-member UN to hold India’s bid to designate Azhar since 2016, whereas the rest 14 members are supporting the proposal.
According to French sources, France expressed condolences on the Pulwama attack and Diplomatic Advisor to the French President Philippe Etienne and Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval discussed this issue and France’s decision came after this discussion.
