Amol Palekar's Censorship Triggers Nationwide Outrage

New Delhi: Veteran actor Amol Palekar being restrained by the organisers of an art exhibition by the National Gallery of Modern Art has triggered a national outrage. Both the social activists and opposition parties have called it censorship of free speech.

The incidence occurred when Amol Palekar was speaking at an event organised by the National Gallery of Modern Art. Palekar was interrupted by the organisers when he made some critical comments on the functioning of the art institution.

He was repeatedly interrupted and requested to stick to the topic. The actor has termed the incident as an act of censorship.

Palekar welcomed the National Gallery of Modern Art's initiative of organising the exhibition of Arts by noted artist Prabhakar Barve. But he criticised the Ministry of Culture for scrapping the advisory committees at the Mumbai and Bengaluru centres. He feared that the centres are going to be managed by bureaucrats or an agent of the Government having an agenda of moral policing or proliferation of certain Art with an ideological incline.

After interruptions by the Exhibition Curator Jesel Thacker, Palekar continued his criticism and cited the example of writer Nayantara Sehgal, whose invitation to a program was withdrawn to avoid controversy. 'Are we creating the same situation here?' Palekar asked the organisers.

The incident has once again angered social activists and opposition parties. The social media is agog with reactions and comments.

The congress party has said the incident is a deliberate effort to suppress dissent and threatening those who follow the different school of thought.

While AAP's Alka Lamba criticised the organisers for the insult to the veteran actor, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav tweeted that the BJP wants to make India monochrome and colourless. It shows the nervousness of the Government.

CPI(M)'s Sitaram Yechury condemned the incident as undemocratic and said no one is above criticism.
