Modi Greeted with ‘Black Flags’ in Assam

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was greeted with black flags here on Saturday for the second consecutive day over the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, media reports stated.

The Prime Minister was shown black flags in at least two places here with slogans like 'Modi go back', 'Scrap Citizenship Amendment Bill', 'Joi Aai Asom (Glory to Mother Assam)' during his visit to this northeast state.

The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) members waved black flags at Modi, who was on his way to the airport from the Raj Bhawan here on Saturday.

The AJYCP members showed black flags to Modi when his huge convoy was passing through the Gauhati University at Jalukbari area, reports stated.

Earlier, the members of All Assam Students Union (AASU) staged protest against Modi visit waving black flags when he arrived here on Friday evening on a two-day visit to the Northeast.

"The government with its machinery can show its power and strength...No matter how much the government tries to quell the protests, the agitation against the Citizenship Amendment Bill will continue”, AASU said.

The government has proven that it is a protector of the Bangladeshi infiltrators and is against the indigenous people of Assam, said union's chief advisor Sammujal Bhattacharya.

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), one of leading farmers’ organizations, also protested against the Modi’s visit showing black flags to the Prime Minister.

The controversial Bill seeks to provide Indian citizenship to Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan after six years of residence in India even if they do not possess any document.

The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha during the Winter Session on January 8 and has been awaiting Rajya Sabha nod.
