Bhubaneswar: A day after former CBI Director Alok Verma resigned from service following his removal from CBI, Arup Patnaik, the former Mumbai Police Commissioner hailed Verma’s decision to resign from services and described him as an honest officer and said his Integrity is beyond doubt.
Speaking exclusively to The Newsroom.co.in over phone about Verma, Patnaik said “He (Alok Verma) is my batch-mate and a close friend. He is an honest officer. All allegations against him are baseless. Some people tried to remove him by hook or crook. As he is an upright officer, he did not dance to the political boss' tunes. It is good that he resigned from services.”
When asked whether political bosses interfere in CBI, Patnaik' said, “They appoint the people who will work for them and according to them.”
Replying to a question about autonomy of other institution under Modi Raj, he said, “Everybody knows it how every institute functions under Modi Government. You all (referring journalists) are well known to it”.
Notably, Verma was removed as CBI director by the Selection Committee comprising the Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition and Justice A K Sikri, nominee of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi.
In a statement, Verma said that the CBI must function without external influences.
"I have tried to uphold the integrity of the institution while attempts were being made to destroy it," Verma stated.
He also said, "I have been transferred to another post pursuant to the orders of the committee which was assigned the task of deciding my future course of action as Director CBI. I have stood up for the integrity of the institution, and if asked, will do it again in order to uphold the rule of law."
