Bargarh: Bargarh town has turned into Mathura Nagari, the kingdom of Kansa, as the world's biggest open air theatre festival ‘Dhanu Yatra’ began here today with much fanfare.
The 11-day long festival, based on mythological story of Krishna and his cruel uncle Kansa, will see entire five sq km town being transformed into a very big stage for live play symbolizing the victory of Lord Krishna, the embodiment of truth, justice and righteous over Kansa who personifies arrogance and wickedness.
The play starts with the dethroning of emperor Ugrasena by the angry prince Kansa, over the marriage of his sister Debaki with Basudeba, and ends with death of Kansa, and Ugrasen restoring back to become the king.
The most interesting part of this popular mass dram is that there is no written script used in the enactments.
For the next 11 days, the main town will look like the historical town of Mathura Nagari, river Jeera turns into Yamuna and Ambapaali village becomes Gopapura.
Bhubaneswar Pradhan is playing the role of King Kansa this year while Ayush Birtia and Ashutosh Birtia are performing the roles of Lord Krishna and Balaram respectively.
